Kilim rugs

A Kilim rug is a flat-woven rug — woven rather than knotted — traditionally made by nomadic weavers in wool, with bold geometric motifs and no pile. Because there’s no pile building up the design, kilims are thinner and lighter than knotted rugs, but no less hard-wearing. Our guide to Kilim rugs goes into more detail on their origins and how they’re made.

Yes — the tight flatweave construction makes Kilim rugs surprisingly durable for how thin they are, and wool kilims are naturally stain-resistant too.

They’re firmer than a deep-pile rug, since there’s no pile to add cushioning, but a well-made wool kilim still feels warm and substantial underfoot. If softness matters more than pattern, a shaggy or high-pile rug will feel plusher — a kilim’s appeal is more about its flat, tailored look and practicality.

Regular hoovering and gentle brushing with a recessed brush should get rid of any excess fibres, keeping a Kilim rug looking its best. Any spillages should be spot-cleaned quickly with cold water and a white cloth. If you’re struggling to get rid of an unsightly stain, call in an expert rug cleaner.

Rugvista’s range runs from small Kilim rugs around 83 x 126 cm up to large Kilim rugs between 160 x 230 and 250 x 250 cm, plus extra large sizes for open plan spaces. A small or medium option suits a bedside spot or reading corner, while a larger pieces anchor a living room seating area. Our rug size guide has more on matching a size to your room.
