Vintage rugs

A genuine vintage rug is made from real, older rug remnants, often Turkish, that have been reworked, colour-neutralised and over-dyed into new shades, so each one is one-of-a-kind. Our collection contains a huge selection of these genuine pieces; plus a smaller number of “vintage-style rugs”: new that recreate the same faded, weathered look.

Country of origin, the weaving technique and the materials used are the main clues — a genuine vintage or over-dyed rug is hand-knotted, usually in wool, and often shows the base pattern of the original rug still faintly visible under the over-dye.

Yes — genuine vintage rugs are hand-knotted, one of the most hard-wearing rug constructions, so they hold up well even in busy households despite their delicate-looking colours.

Rugvista’s collection runs from small vintage rugs all the way up to extra large vintage rugs, plus long runners for hallways and corridors. Small and medium sizes suit a bedside spot or reading corner, while a large or extra large piece anchors a living room seating area. Our rug size guide has more on matching a size to your room.

Vintage rugs work well almost anywhere, since the muted, faded colours sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary rooms. A hand-knotted piece is hard-wearing enough for a busy living room or hallway, while a softer design also works well in a bedroom.
