How to use rugs in interior design?
Rugs are an incredibly useful home decor design tool. One of the best ways to use them is to create room zones; in large spaces, area rugs can divide and separate different areas to give them their own, unique feel. They’re also a great way to add a cosy, inviting atmosphere, particularly in modern or industrial home decor schemes.
What are the current rug trends?
Oriental and Berber rugs are a huge home decor trend at the moment. Oriental styles in lighter colours such as cream, grey, pale blue, and baby pink are popular, especially runners, placed in hallways and kitchens. Oversized Berber carpets are great for large living and dining rooms, with big, soft tufts of wool that feel amazing underfoot. Washable rugs are also very popular thanks to their immense practicality.
How do I choose a rug style?
When choosing a new rug as decor for your home, there are a few things to consider:
- Material. What material you choose for your home decor scheme will depend on a number of factors. You’ll need to think about what you want it to feel like underfoot – if you want it to be incredibly soft, look for wool, silk, and cotton rugs. If durability is more important, jute and plastic rugs are able to handle a large amount of foot traffic, but they aren’t as luxe to walk on.
- Size. Make sure you measure your space carefully before choosing a rug. Grand rooms and ornate home decor suit large area rugs, but large styles can also look great in smaller spaces. If you have a carpet or old flooring that you’d prefer to cover, bigger is better.
- Cleaning. If your rug is in a high-traffic area, you might want to choose a material that’s easy to clean and stain resistant, such as polyester, plastic, and jute. For floors that don’t get as dirty, such as bedrooms, you may want to invest in carpet fabrics such as viscose, bamboo silk, wool, and cotton.
- Colour/pattern. Do you want to go bold with your home decor, and make a real style statement? Or would you prefer to simply add texture with nudes and neutrals? Do you want to create a cool colour clash or have a harmonious colour scheme? These are all questions to consider when choosing your new rug.
Rugs are a cost-efficient, simple, and fun way to update your space. If you’re looking for home decor online, a new rug is a great place to start realising your interior design plans.
