An oriental rug is a rug in a traditional pattern, typically a medallion, floral or geometric design, with a framing border. They’re usually made in wool or cotton.

Four of the most popular are:

• Gabbeh: Gabbeh rugs are known for rich, bold colours, often in simpler, more open designs that let the colour do the work. A good choice if you want a traditional rug that feels relaxed rather than formal.
• Berber: Berber rugs come from the Berber tribes of North Africa and have playful, geometric patterns. They suit casual living rooms and bedrooms where you want character without a formal look.
• Kilim: Kilim rugs are flatwoven, usually with diagonal, stair-like motifs. With no pile, they are thin, light and easy to clean, which makes them practical for hallways and under dining tables.
• Nain: Nain rugs have fine, intricate detail, which makes them a good centrepiece. They work best where the rug is the focal point, such as a living room with simple furniture.

Our guide to types of oriental rugs goes into more detail.

Choose a rug big enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. In most living rooms that means a medium or large oriental rug, from around 160 x 230 cm up to 200 x 300 cm. For a very large room, see our extra large oriental rugs over 350 cm.

Yes. Oriental runners fit narrow hallways, and the dense pattern is forgiving in busy spots. Under a dining table, allow 60–70 cm on each side so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Hoover regularly, always in the direction of the pile, and avoid a beater bar on delicate pieces. Blot spills straight away with a cold, damp white cloth rather than rubbing. Rotating the rug now and then helps it wear evenly.
