Multicoloured rugs

A multicoloured rug typically combines three or more distinct colours in its design, rather than a single shade or a two-tone pattern. At Rugvista that ranges from muted, tonal blends to bold, patterned abstract and geometric designs, so you can pick something that reads as subtle or as a statement depending on how bold you want the palette. If you’re weighing up shades against your existing furniture, our guide on how to choose a rug colour can help.

Multicoloured rugs come in the same size range as our other rugs: small (under 160 cm), medium (160–229 cm), large (230–349 cm) and extra large (over 350 cm), plus round options. A large multicoloured rug works well as a colourful living room rug, big enough to anchor a whole seating area without the pattern feeling cramped, while a small colourful rug suits a layered look or a smaller room. Our rug size guide can help you measure up and find the perfect fit.

Not if you pick up on one dominant colour from the rug elsewhere in the room. A multicoloured rug works best as either the boldest pattern in the room or the calmest one – trying to match two busy patterns at once usually looks cluttered rather than considered. In a room with patterned walls or a printed sofa, a multicoloured rug with a muted, tonal palette tends to sit more comfortably than a high-contrast one.

Hoover regularly on a pile-appropriate setting and blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them in, and a multicoloured rug should hold its colours as well as a single-tone one. Because a multicoloured design already varies in shade, light everyday marks are generally less noticeable than they would be on a plain rug. Keep any rug out of strong, direct sunlight over time, as this can fade all colours – bright multicoloured patterns included.
