Ziegler ArianaHand KnottedRug

Brown / Dark yellow208 x 307 cm

The Ziegler Ariana tradition represents a fascinating evolution in the history of rug making. Originally inspired by the grand, formal designs of the Middle East, these rugs were developed in the late 19th century to meet the tastes of Western markets, favouring more open fields and softer, more muted colour palettes than their predecessors.

Today, the tradition continues in Afghanistan, where artisans blend these classic design sensibilities with local weaving techniques. The name Ariana itself refers to an ancient designation for the region, reflecting a deep respect for the area's long-standing connection to textile arts and the movement of cultural aesthetics across the Silk Road.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their elegant floral motifs, often featuring sweeping vines and stylised blossoms. Unlike more rigid geometric styles, the Ziegler Ariana leans into an organic, flowing language of design. This particular rug captures that spirit, with its complex floral elements balanced against a serene, neutral field that allows the colours to pop with subtle intensity.

For collectors and homeowners alike, these rugs are valued for their ability to bridge the gap between historical craft and modern interior needs. They are not merely floor coverings but pieces of heritage that celebrate the human hand, offering a level of depth and texture that connects your home to a wider, storied tradition of textile artistry.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring its complex floral design to life. The process begins with carefully prepared wool, which is knotted onto a sturdy cotton foundation to ensure structural integrity and long-term durability.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, the construction represents a significant investment of time and human skill. This density is essential for achieving the sharp definition of the floral motifs and ensures that the pile remains dense and plush over many years of use.

The substantial weight of 26.2 kg across its 307 x 208 cm frame is a testament to the quality of materials and the labour-intensive nature of the weaving process. Each knot is placed with precision, resulting in a durable and balanced rug that stands as a reliable piece of craft for your home.
