Ziegler ArianaHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange207 x 309 cm

The Ziegler Ariana tradition is rooted in the late 19th-century demand for rugs that balanced traditional Middle Eastern artistry with the aesthetic preferences of Western markets. These rugs were originally commissioned by the Ziegler & Co firm to feature softer palettes and more open, elegant designs that would complement European and American interiors.

The craft relies on time-honoured techniques that have been passed down through generations in Afghanistan. These rugs are known for their distinctive, slightly distressed look, which is achieved through specific finishing processes that give them an aged, sophisticated feel from the moment they are completed.

Visually, the Ziegler Ariana is defined by its bold yet graceful floral patterns, often featuring large, flowing blossoms and delicate tendrils that sweep across the field. The borders are typically wide and well-proportioned, framing the central design with a sense of formal balance that is central to this style.

Collectors value these rugs for their ability to bridge the gap between historical heritage and contemporary design. Owning one is an investment in a living tradition, representing a standard of skill that is increasingly rare in a world of mass production.

Every inch of this rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to ensure each detail is perfectly placed. This labour-intensive process is what gives the rug its exceptional durability and allows for the refined, clear design that defines the Ziegler style.

With a total weight of 26.2 kg across its generous surface area, this rug reflects a dense construction that speaks to the quality and volume of materials used. The substantial weight is a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring the rug lies flat and withstands the demands of daily use while maintaining its shape and beauty over time.
