Modern rug weaving in India has evolved into a sophisticated blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic vision. By drawing on centuries of regional expertise, Indian artisans have become world-renowned for their ability to interpret clean, minimalist designs through classic, time-honoured techniques.

The art of hand-knotting is a cornerstone of this tradition. This method involves tying individual strands of material onto a foundation, creating a pile that is both dense and resilient. This approach is highly valued because it allows for greater precision in pattern and a much longer lifespan than mass-produced alternatives.

This particular rug features a geometric design that emphasises spatial balance. While traditional motifs often lean toward intricate floral or tribal patterns, this modern interpretation uses bold, clean shapes to create a sense of order and tranquillity. The contrast between the soft tones and the sharp geometry creates a visual rhythm that is both subtle and impactful.

Owning a hand-knotted piece from India is more than just a purchase; it is an investment in human skill and cultural heritage. These rugs are collected for their ability to bridge the gap between historical craft and modern aesthetic needs, offering a level of character and authenticity that mass-produced items lack.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By carefully placing each knot by hand, the artisans ensure a level of detail and structural integrity that simply cannot be achieved through mechanical production.

With a total area of approximately 7.5 m2 and a density of 90,000 knots per m2, this piece represents over 670,000 individual hand-tied knots. This significant investment of labour is what gives the rug its lasting durability and its refined, even pile.

The weight of 20.2 kg speaks to the density of the materials and the effort invested in the foundation of the piece. Every step of the process is handled with care, resulting in a finished rug that feels substantial, well-constructed, and ready to serve as a long-term addition to your home.
