TurkamanHand KnottedRug

BlackRunner82 x 278 cm

The Turkaman rug tradition is deeply rooted in the nomadic history of the Middle East, where tribal groups developed distinct weaving styles that reflected their environment and cultural identity. These rugs are renowned for their disciplined, repeating designs, which have evolved over centuries into the sophisticated, highly sought-after textiles we see today.

The technical quality of these rugs is defined by their dense, short pile, which is achieved through a precise hand-knotting process. This construction method is not merely for aesthetics; it produces a lustrous, resilient surface that is famous for its durability, allowing the rugs to withstand decades of use while maintaining their vibrant appearance.

Visually, Turkaman rugs are instantly recognisable for their use of repeating guls, which are octagonal or medallion-like motifs arranged in orderly rows across the field. These motifs are typically framed by elaborate, geometric borders that serve to contain the pattern, creating a sense of harmony and balance that is a hallmark of this regional design language.

Owning a Turkaman rug is an investment in a living heritage. These pieces are collected worldwide not only for their striking visual appeal but for the immense skill and cultural history they represent. By bringing one into your home, you are connecting with a long lineage of artisans whose dedication to their craft has turned functional floor coverings into timeless treasures.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern precision that remains unmatched by any automated process.

With a total of approximately 570,000 individual knots, the labour required to complete this rug is extensive, reflecting a deep commitment to the craft. This density not only contributes to the sharpness of the intricate patterns but also ensures a robust pile that will endure for many years of daily use.

The construction is further supported by a total weight of 8 kg, which speaks to the generous amount of high-quality material used. This weight confirms the density of the Wool pile and the solid foundation of the rug, providing a stable and substantial floor covering that remains firmly in place.
