TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black140 x 205 cm

Turkaman rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, a region with a storied history of weaving that has evolved over centuries. While these designs were historically created by various tribal groups, they have become a global symbol of Middle Eastern weaving heritage, known for their distinct colour palettes and disciplined geometric layouts.

The construction of these rugs typically involves a meticulous process where fine materials are knotted onto a sturdy foundation. This traditional approach produces a dense pile that is highly resistant to wear, a hallmark of the craft that ensures these pieces remain functional and vibrant long after they are first woven.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their use of repeating gul motifs, which are stylized, medallion-like shapes often arranged in rows across the field. The borders are frequently complex and formal, mirroring the precision found in the central design. While many follow a traditional red-heavy colour scheme, the variations in secondary tones make every rug distinct.

Collectors value these rugs for their balance of symmetry and symbolic storytelling. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in human skill, representing a legacy of artistry that has been passed down through generations. These rugs are more than just floor coverings; they are vessels of cultural history that add depth and character to any home.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-knotted process, where each individual knot is placed by a skilled artisan. This labour-intensive technique requires a high level of precision and patience, resulting in a product where the design is consistent and the structure is exceptionally robust.

The quality of this piece is evidenced by its weight of 10 kg, which reflects the significant amount of wool used to create a dense, resilient pile. This substantial material investment, combined with the detailed hand-knotting, ensures that the final rug is not only visually striking but also physically durable enough to handle the demands of everyday life.
