Black / Dark red128 x 198 cm

Turkaman rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, where weaving was a vital part of daily life and cultural identity. Over centuries, these traditions migrated and evolved, with the finest examples now being crafted by skilled artisans throughout the Middle East who have preserved the techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of their ancestors.

The craftsmanship behind these rugs is defined by their specific construction, which prioritises a dense and durable pile. This focus on technique ensures that the rug is not only a decorative item but a functional piece designed to withstand the rigours of domestic life, maintaining its lustre and resilience through generations of use.

Signature design elements of the Turkaman tradition include the iconic repeating gul motifs, which are often octagonal or elephant-foot shapes arranged in orderly rows. These are typically enclosed by complex, geometric borders that frame the field, creating a cohesive and rhythmic visual experience that is instantly recognisable to those who appreciate traditional weaving.

Valued by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, these rugs are cherished for the immense skill required to produce them and the cultural narrative they carry. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in heritage, representing a connection to a long-standing history of artistry that prioritises lasting quality over fleeting trends.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of concentrated effort to bring the intricate design to life. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots across the foundation, a level of labour-intensive work that results in the remarkable density and long-term durability of the finished piece.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the construction reflects an incredible commitment to quality and precision. This high knot count is essential for achieving the sharp, detailed patterns characteristic of the Turkaman style, while also creating a robust pile that stands up to daily life.

The substantial weight of 8.9 kg for this 198 x 128 cm rug is a direct result of the high-quality materials and tight, dense knotting used throughout its creation. This weight is a hallmark of superior craftsmanship, ensuring the rug lays flat and retains its shape, reflecting the time and expertise invested by the weaver.
