Tabriz AntiqueHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange149 x 204 cm

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has long stood as one of the most famous centres of carpet weaving in the world. For centuries, workshops in the city have brought together diverse cultural influences from across trading routes, developing a sophisticated design vocabulary that balances formal geometry with flowing floral motifs.

The designation 50 Raj refers to a traditional unit of measurement used in Tabriz workshops to indicate the fineness of the weave, counting the number of knot foundations across a specific width. This high count requires exceptional skill from the weaver, allowing for intricate curves and detailed medallion patterns that simpler looms cannot achieve.

The design of this piece centres on a classic medallion layout, surrounded by detailed floral spandrels and a rich border filled with repeating botanical elements. The choice of pink and red tones gives the traditional composition a distinct visual depth, showing how master weavers played with colour palettes while staying true to classical regional formats.

Owning an antique rug from this tradition connects your home to generations of weaving knowledge. These pieces are collected not just for their decorative presence, but for the remarkable patience and human skill embedded in every square centimetre of their construction.

Created entirely by hand using a traditional hand-knotted technique, this rug represents months of dedicated human labour. Artisans carefully tie each individual knot by hand onto the foundation, building up the dense 10 mm pile with meticulous precision.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2 and a total surface area covering 204 x 149 cm, this piece contains approximately 759,000 individual knots. Completing a work of this scale requires skilled hands and sustained concentration over many months, resulting in the structural integrity and sharp design clarity that define fine hand-knotted rugs.

The substantial weight of 9.1 kg reflects the dense packing of wool fibres and foundation threads. This careful construction ensures the rug lies flat, resists shifting underfoot, and provides the enduring quality expected from traditional Persian weaving traditions.
