ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Orange / Brown249 x 297 cm

The Shabargan tradition originates from northern Afghanistan, drawing on centuries of nomadic and village weaving heritage. Artisans in this region carry forward generational techniques, passing down the knowledge of natural dyeing, wool preparation, and intricate pattern work from family to family.

Hand-knotted construction remains the hallmark of this tradition. Skilled weavers set up vertical looms and tie thousands of individual loops of wool by hand, a time-honored method that produces a robust foundation and a pile capable of withstanding decades of daily living.

The visual language of Shabargan rugs often centers around detailed floral motifs, delicate vines, and balanced borders that frame the central field. Each motif is carefully mapped out from memory or traditional design Shablon grids, resulting in a harmonious balance of earthy tones and intricate botanical elements.

Collecting a Shabargan rug means owning a piece of living cultural history. The combination of local wool, traditional knotting, and regional artistry creates a floor covering that carries genuine heritage, offering lasting quality that connects modern homes to ancient craft traditions.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months tying individual knots by hand to bring the intricate floral design to life. This meticulous process requires immense patience and precision, involving roughly 1,184,000 individual knots across the entire surface.

Weighing 23.7 kg, the substantial construction reflects the heavy density of the wool and the time-intensive labor invested in every square centimetre. Such a high weight-to-size ratio points to a dense foundation and a level of craftsmanship that only dedicated human hands can achieve.
