ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black215 x 311 cm

The tradition of rug-making in Afghanistan is deeply rooted in the history of the Middle East, drawing on centuries of nomadic and settled weaving cultures. These rugs often feature designs that reflect the heritage of local tribes, integrating ancient geometric symbols with a colour palette derived from natural landscapes and mineral dyes.

The term 'hand-knotted' refers to the specific technique where each individual knot is tied by hand onto the vertical foundation. This method is the hallmark of premium quality in the region, as it allows for the creation of complex, durable patterns that are far more resilient than those produced by any other method.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold use of geometric motifs and structured borders. The Shabargan style often utilises earthy tones, incorporating deep reds, browns, and blues to create a balanced, rhythmic composition. These patterns are not merely decorative but often tell stories of the weaver's environment and cultural identity.

Owning an Afghan rug is an entry into a world of dedicated craftsmanship and cultural endurance. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the human story woven into every thread. By acquiring one, you are preserving a legacy of skill that continues to define the artistic output of the region.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the artisans spend months carefully tying each individual strand of Wool to the cotton foundation. This level of precision ensures a robust pile that maintains its shape and intricate pattern detail over time.

The physical weight of 21.4 kg for a rug of this 311 x 215 cm size is a testament to the quality and volume of materials used. The density achieved through this traditional knotting technique creates a firm, heavy, and durable structure that stands up to daily use while providing a luxurious, thick feel underfoot.
