ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Brown / Dark yellow167 x 247 cm

The Shabargan rug finds its roots in the storied weaving traditions of Northern Afghanistan. This region has long been a hub for nomadic and settled weavers who have preserved ancient techniques, passing down complex geometric design languages through generations of families.

The craft of hand-knotting is a cornerstone of this tradition, where the quality is defined by the meticulous placement of each individual strand. This method creates a pile that is not only visually rich but also exceptionally durable, designed to withstand the rigours of both nomadic life and modern home environments.

Visually, these rugs are characterised by their formal, repeating geometric motifs and refined borders. The use of earthy, natural tones often reflects the landscape of the region, while the specific arrangement of medallions and tribal symbols provides a narrative of history and identity embedded directly into the wool.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an act of preserving cultural heritage. These pieces are valued for their authenticity and the human story behind every knot. Owning one means you are not just acquiring a floor covering, but a piece of history that reflects the skill, patience, and artistic vision of its maker.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot onto a cotton foundation, the makers ensure a level of structural integrity and pattern definition that machines cannot replicate.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, this rug represents a significant investment of human effort. Given its size of 247 x 167 cm, this translates to a massive total knot count, a feat that takes a dedicated artisan months of focused work to complete.

The substantial weight of 13.2 kg is a testament to the quality and density of the materials used. This weight indicates a high concentration of wool, which contributes to the rug's durability and ensures it remains a sturdy, long-lasting element of your home decor for years to come.
