Brown / Black157 x 211 cm

The rich tradition of rug-making in northern Afghanistan is deeply tied to the towns and nomadic populations of the region, where crafting floor coverings has served as a vital cultural expression for centuries. These workshops draw on a deep reservoir of local knowledge, utilizing techniques that have survived centuries of changing dynasties along historic trade routes.

The classification of this piece points to traditional knotting methods where individual strands of wool are tied firmly to the warp threads by hand. This intensive method creates a sturdy foundation and a dense pile that resists daily wear while maintaining a soft, tactile surface.

Design traditions in this part of the Middle East often favor structured geometric layouts, repeated medallions, and earthy palettes dominated by deep browns and reds. These traditional motifs serve as a visual language, connecting modern homes to ancient nomadic artistry through carefully balanced patterns and borders.

Owning a rug from this storied tradition means welcoming a piece of genuine cultural heritage into your home. It represents months of dedicated human labor and a continuation of textile arts that prioritize lasting quality over mass production.

Creating this hand-knotted Shabargan rug requires immense patience, precision, and traditional expertise passed down through generations. Artisans spend months tying each individual knot by hand onto the loom, ensuring that the wool pile is securely fastened for lasting durability.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2 distributed across its 211 x 157 cm dimensions, this piece represents a total investment of roughly 3 million individually placed knots. This meticulous hand-knotting process results in a remarkably sturdy structure with a weight of 10.6 kg, reflecting the substantial quantity of natural wool and human effort poured into its creation.
