Dark grey / Brown155 x 203 cm

The tradition of rug weaving in Afghanistan is deeply rooted in the cultural history of the Middle East, reflecting a long lineage of nomadic and village craft. Regions like Shabargan have historically served as important hubs where diverse artistic influences converge, blending local aesthetics with the timeless techniques passed down through generations of families.

The quality of these rugs is defined by their traditional hand-knotted construction. Using high-quality Wool, weavers create a structure that is both resilient and supple. This method of construction is essential for the longevity of the rug, as the tightly packed knots provide a supportive foundation that resists wear while allowing the natural lustre of the Wool to shine through.

The design of this rug features repeating medallions, a hallmark of Middle Eastern weaving traditions. These motifs are often inspired by geometric forms and natural symbols, arranged to create a harmonious balance across the field. The use of a grey field is a sophisticated contemporary choice that highlights the vibrant, varied colours within the medallions, making the patterns appear even more vivid.

Owning a rug from this region is a way to connect with a storied craft heritage. Each rug is a testament to the skill and cultural identity of its makers, representing a level of artistry that is increasingly rare in a world of mass production. Collectors value these pieces not only for their beauty but for the tangible history and human dedication woven into every thread.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process that requires immense patience and precision. Each individual knot is tied by hand, resulting in a robust structure that ensures the rug will stand the test of time while maintaining its intricate pattern clarity.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 203 x 155 cm piece represents a significant investment of time and human effort. This high knot count allows for the complex, crisp detailing seen in the medallions and ensures a dense, luxurious pile that is both soft to the touch and highly durable.

The substantial weight of 10.1 kg is a direct result of the high-quality materials and dense knotting used throughout the construction. This weight signifies a superior build quality, providing a stable, grounded feel that reflects the many months of dedicated work required to complete this unique item.
