SennehHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red75 x 125 cm

Senneh rugs originate from the Sanandaj region in the western Middle East, a city historically renowned for its sophisticated weaving traditions. These rugs are deeply connected to the cultural identity of the local Kurdish population, who have developed a distinct visual language that sets their work apart from other regional styles.

The technical hallmark of a Senneh rug is its unique knotting technique, which often utilises a single-weft construction. This method allows for a thinner, more flexible rug that is still incredibly durable. This specific approach to the foundation is what gives these rugs their signature drape and makes them highly prized by collectors for their blend of fine detail and structural integrity.

Visually, these pieces are celebrated for their intricate, often geometric or floral-inspired motifs, such as the classic Herati or the 'fish' pattern. The central medallion is a frequent feature, often surrounded by a field of densely packed, symmetrical designs that demonstrate the weaver's mastery of proportion and colour balance.

Owning a Senneh rug is an investment in a living heritage. These pieces are not merely floor coverings but are documented artefacts of a centuries-old craft that has been passed down through generations. To possess one is to participate in the preservation of a design tradition that values patience, precision, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Each Senneh rug is created through a traditional hand-knotted process that requires immense patience and precision. The artisans meticulously tie every individual knot by hand, a labour-intensive method that creates a robust and tight structure, ensuring the rug can withstand the test of time.

Given the specific dimensions of 125 x 75 cm and a weight of 3.8 kg, this piece is remarkably dense. This weight reflects the generous amount of high-quality Wool used and the tight foundation, which combined, provide the rug with its signature durability and substantial feel underfoot.

The time invested in creating this rug is substantial, as the complex, detailed patterns require the weaver to follow a traditional design while maintaining consistent tension across the entire surface. This human effort is what grants the rug its life and vitality, resulting in a finished product that is far superior to any mass-produced alternative.
