Senneh rugs originate from the Sanandaj region in the western part of the Middle East. This area has long been a hub for weaving, known for producing some of the most sophisticated and tightly knotted pieces in the region. The tradition here is deeply rooted in local culture, where weaving is passed down through generations, maintaining a distinct aesthetic that balances complex geometric precision with fluid, organic forms.
The term Senneh refers to both the origin and the specific, highly refined weaving technique employed by local artisans. These rugs are celebrated for their distinctive use of a single-weft construction, which allows for a thinner, more flexible, and remarkably detailed fabric. This technical approach is a hallmark of the region and is what enables the intricate, delicate patterns that collectors have prized for centuries.
Signature design elements of these rugs often include a central medallion, which is frequently surrounded by a fine, repeating pattern of floral or geometric motifs. The borders are typically narrow and highly detailed, framing the central field with a level of care that highlights the artisan's control over the medium. While red is a classic choice for the field, the secondary colours often include deep blues and earthy tones, which provide a balanced and harmonious visual experience.
Owning a Senneh rug is an investment in cultural heritage and refined skill. These pieces are highly valued by collectors because they represent the pinnacle of regional weaving, combining complex artistry with a durability that defies their delicate appearance. To have one in your home is to house a piece of living history, a testament to a craft tradition that prioritises beauty, precision, and the human touch above all else.
