Sarouk AmericanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange244 x 296 cm

The Sarough tradition traces its roots to the village of Sarouk in the central region of the Middle East. Historically, these rugs became world-renowned in the early 20th century, particularly in the United States, where their thick, durable pile and graceful floral sprays became a symbol of elegance and domestic comfort.

The term 'Sarough' refers to a specific style of weaving that emphasizes a sturdy foundation and a dense, high-quality pile. These rugs are traditionally known for their sophisticated use of colour and intricate, flowing floral patterns that often feature central medallions or expansive, scrolling vines, creating a balanced and formal aesthetic.

Design elements in a traditional Sarough often include stylized blossoms, palmettes, and serrated leaves, all connected by delicate tendrils. The borders are typically wide and framed by secondary floral patterns, which help to ground the complex central field and draw the eye inward toward the heart of the design.

Today, the tradition continues in regions such as India, where weavers honour these classic patterns with renewed dedication. Collecting a piece from this lineage means participating in a centuries-old craft that values patience, skill, and the pursuit of beauty, making it a cherished addition to any home that values heritage and enduring quality.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring the design to life. The process begins by tensioning the foundation on a vertical loom, where every single knot is tied by hand to secure the wool pile, creating a structure that is both flexible and incredibly durable.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the craftsmanship involved is significant, requiring a high degree of precision to ensure the pattern flows seamlessly across the entire surface. This level of complexity is why such a piece takes so long to complete, as the artisan must carefully manage the tension and placement of each knot to achieve the final, uniform finish.

The weight of 21.7 kg across the 296 x 244 cm dimensions serves as a testament to the generous amount of high-quality material used in its construction. This substantial weight is a clear indicator of the density of the pile and the robustness of the foundation, ensuring that the rug will remain stable and look beautiful for generations.
