PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark redRoundØ 195 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a fascinating evolution in textile craft, originating from the Middle Eastern tradition of repurposing and extending the life of beautiful, hand-woven floor coverings. When a rug sustains localised damage or wear, the remaining intact sections are carefully salvaged, cleaned, and re-dyed, then masterfully combined to create something entirely new.

This process is a testament to the longevity of wool. By treating these fragments as individual building blocks, artisans can create complex, multi-layered designs that mirror the aesthetic diversity of the region. The resulting patchwork is not just a rug, but a curated collection of motifs and textures that have been given a second life.

Signature elements in this style often include remnants of traditional medallions and floral scrolls. Because these pieces are sourced from various origins, the rug often features a mix of colour palettes and design styles that would not traditionally appear in a single weaving. This juxtaposition creates a dynamic visual language that feels both historical and contemporary.

Owning a patchwork rug is an act of supporting sustainable craft and preserving the legacy of traditional weaving. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their ability to bridge the gap between antique charm and modern interior needs, offering a unique narrative in every stitch.

This rug is created through a meticulous hand-knotted process, where individual vintage segments are carefully selected and joined to form a unified composition. The construction relies on a sturdy cotton foundation, which provides the necessary strength to hold these varying pieces securely in place.

Given its generous 195 cm diameter and significant weight of 13.3 kg, this piece represents a substantial investment of time and labour. The assembly of such a complex patchwork requires a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how different textures and patterns can be harmonised.

By repurposing and reassembling high-quality wool sections, the craft involves transforming historical textiles into a contemporary format. The result is a durable and dense rug that showcases the skill involved in preserving and reimagining traditional craft for modern living.
