PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Brown / BlackRunner70 x 250 cm

Patchwork rugs originated as an imaginative way to preserve and honor aging hand-knotted textiles across Turkey and the broader Middle East. Rather than discarding worn or damaged vintage rugs, skilled artisans reclaimed intact sections to assemble entirely new floor coverings.

The term patchwork refers to the technique of hand-stitching distinct fragments of older rugs onto a sturdy backing, often bound with cotton thread. This process gives vintage pieces a second life, combining varied textures and traditional hand-knotted weaves into a cohesive modern form.

Visually, Patchwork rugs present a rhythmic layout of grid-like panels filled with faded traditional motifs, floral elements, and geometric fragments. The distressed finishes and softened brown and grey tones reflect decades of natural aging, creating a subtle contrast between traditional patterning and contemporary structure.

These rugs are deeply valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their sustainability and individual history. Each section tells a story from a different village weave or family loom, making every finished Patchwork rug a rich narrative piece with deep cultural weight.

Hand knotted using traditional techniques, this runner represents hours of individual handcraftsmanship. Artisans carefully stitched together selected vintage rug fragments using cotton threads, creating a new composition from existing hand-knotted textiles.

Weighing 6.1 kg for its 250 x 70 cm size, the rug has a reassuring weight and density that reflects the quality of its original hand-knotted construction. Every panel was individually chosen and finished by hand to secure the structure.

The process of repurposing vintage hand-knotted rugs requires immense patience and precise skill. This labor-intensive technique ensures that every section retains its structural integrity while giving aged textiles a second life.
