PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black198 x 298 cm

Patchwork rugs have emerged as a creative response to the rich legacy of Middle Eastern rug-making, specifically from the weaving hubs of Turkey. This tradition involves taking older, well-loved hand-knotted rugs that may have suffered partial damage and carefully salvaging the intact, high-quality sections. By doing so, the craft preserves the history and artistic integrity of original designs while preventing waste.

The terminology surrounding these pieces often refers to the 'over-dying' or 'neutralisation' process, where fragments are treated to harmonise their colours before being joined. This is a technical evolution that allows diverse patterns from different eras and looms to exist together in a single, balanced composition. The resulting aesthetic is one of curated chaos, where the structure of the original knots remains visible beneath a new, unified colour palette.

Signature elements in these rugs include the visible seams and the juxtaposition of different pile heights or knot densities from the original source rugs. While a traditional rug might be defined by a singular medallion or repeating motif, a patchwork rug is defined by the interplay between its individual squares. This creates a rhythmic, geometric visual language that is both familiar and strikingly contemporary.

Collecting a patchwork rug is a way of participating in a cycle of renewal. Each fragment carries the legacy of the original weavers, representing a fusion of past skills and modern design sensibilities. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to bring a sense of collected depth and authentic heritage into a home, making them a cornerstone for those who value sustainable luxury and unique craftsmanship.

This rug is a result of a careful, labour-intensive process that begins with the selection of authentic, hand-knotted fragments. Each section is cleaned and prepared before being skilfully stitched together to form a new, unified design. This method requires a deep understanding of textile geometry to ensure the final piece is balanced and structurally sound.

With a substantial weight of 21 kg, this rug demonstrates the quality and density of the materials used in its construction. This significant weight is a direct result of the dense, hand-knotted origin of the individual fragments, which ensures durability and a firm, flat lie on your floor. The weight serves as a testament to the sheer volume of material and the human effort required to assemble such a substantial piece.

The assembly of a patchwork piece of this scale is a patient, meticulous undertaking that highlights the skill of the artisans involved. By giving new life to existing hand-knotted textiles, the production process honours traditional techniques while creating a contemporary design that is built to last for years to come.
