PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black170 x 240 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a fascinating evolution in the history of textile art, particularly within the Middle Eastern and Turkish traditions. This practice emerged as a creative solution to honour the beauty of older, hand-knotted rugs that had endured years of use, allowing their most vibrant and intact sections to be repurposed into new, contemporary compositions.

The technique involves a sophisticated process of selecting, cleaning, and overdying fragments of vintage rugs to ensure a cohesive look while celebrating the history inherent in each patch. By bringing together these diverse elements, artisans create a new narrative that bridges the gap between traditional weaving techniques and modern interior design sensibilities.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their complex, segmented patterns. While traditional rugs often follow symmetrical, medallion-based layouts, the patchwork tradition thrives on asymmetry and the dynamic interplay of different textures, pile heights, and subtle tonal variations found within the Wool.

Owning a patchwork rug is an investment in cultural sustainability and artistic skill. It reflects a deep appreciation for the longevity of Wool and the expertise of the weavers who originally created the base rugs, as well as the contemporary masters who curate and assemble them into these striking, one-of-a-kind floor coverings.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and dedication to ensure each section is securely integrated into the final design. The assembly of such a complex patchwork requires a keen eye for detail, as artisans must balance the different textures and wear patterns of the Wool segments to create a harmonious and stable surface.

The substantial weight of 14.3 kg for a 240 x 170 cm piece is a testament to the high-quality materials and the density of the construction. This weight indicates a robust build that provides longevity, ensuring the rug maintains its structure and beauty despite the demands of daily use.

The time and human effort invested in this hand-knotted process are significant, reflecting a commitment to quality that is woven into every inch of the rug. By choosing this piece, you are supporting a tradition of craftsmanship where precision and patience are valued above all else, resulting in a floor covering that is as enduring as it is beautiful.
