PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark grey170 x 240 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a contemporary evolution of the age-old tradition of rug-making in Turkey. This category emerged as a way to honour the history of older, worn carpets by giving them a new life, transforming fragments of various rugs into a cohesive, modern design. This practice respects the heritage of the original textiles while adapting them for modern interiors.

The craft relies on an expert eye for colour and texture, as artisans must select pieces that complement one another in tone and pile height. By stitching these fragments together, they create a new composition that retains the character of the original materials while offering a fresh, unified look that bridges the gap between past and present.

The signature aesthetic of these rugs is defined by their modular nature, often featuring a grid-like arrangement that highlights the diversity of the original weaves. While traditional rugs might focus on a central medallion or a formal border, these patchworks celebrate the beauty of the material itself, emphasising the rich variations in shade and texture that occur naturally in aged wool.

Collecting a patchwork rug is an act of preserving history in a new form. It is valued not only for its striking visual impact but also for the skill required to curate and reconstruct these elements into a functional piece of art. For the collector, it offers a sophisticated way to incorporate traditional craftsmanship into a modern lifestyle.

This rug is entirely handmade, utilising a meticulous hand-knotted technique that requires a significant investment of time and skill. By carefully selecting and assembling individual fragments, artisans create a cohesive and durable finished piece that balances structure with artistic expression.

With a total weight of 14.3 kg for its 240 x 170 cm frame, this rug demonstrates a high density of material that speaks to its quality and resilience. This weight ensures that the rug remains stable and durable, even in high-traffic areas of the home.

The construction process prioritises long-term integrity, ensuring that each connection between the patches is secure. This dedication to craft means the rug is built to withstand daily use while maintaining its unique aesthetic, providing a reliable and beautiful foundation for years to come.
