PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Grey158 x 232 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a fascinating evolution in the history of carpet weaving, emerging from the necessity of preserving the beauty of older, damaged textiles. In Turkey, a region with a deep-seated culture of carpet production, this practice allows artisans to rescue fragments of rugs that have survived decades of use, giving them a new life rather than allowing them to be discarded.

The technique relies on the careful selection of Wool fragments, often featuring different pile heights or aged patinas. By combining these pieces, the artisan creates a new narrative. The process requires an intimate knowledge of how different weaves behave, ensuring that the final result is not only visually balanced but also structurally sound.

Visually, these rugs move away from traditional central medallions and instead embrace a grid-like or organic arrangement of patterns. While the individual squares may have once been part of diverse tribal or village rugs, they are unified here by a singular colour palette, which highlights the subtle variations in the weave and the history held within each fibre.

Owning a patchwork rug is an act of supporting sustainable craft and honouring the skill of past generations. It is a bridge between the historical significance of traditional weaving and the requirements of modern interior design, offering a piece that is as much a collector's item as it is a practical addition to your home.

This rug is entirely handmade through a meticulous process of deconstructing and reassembling vintage hand-knotted fragments. Each section is chosen for its character and wear, then securely stitched to create a harmonious whole that retains the structural integrity of the original weaving.

With a weight of 12.8 kg, this rug demonstrates the substantial amount of material and labour invested in its construction. The density of the Wool pile and the strength of the foundation ensure that the rug lies flat and withstands the demands of daily use while maintaining its shape.

The creation of such a patchwork requires a keen eye for composition and a steady hand to align the varied pieces. This level of craftsmanship transforms individual remnants into a cohesive, durable floor covering that celebrates the longevity and beauty of hand-knotted Wool.
