PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown140 x 200 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a fascinating evolution in the history of textile arts, particularly within the Middle Eastern and Turkish craft traditions. This practice emerged as a resourceful and creative way to honour the legacy of older, hand-woven textiles that had served their initial purpose but still possessed immense beauty and structural integrity.

The technique involves the careful curation of segments from various hand-knotted rugs, often blending different patterns and age-worn textures into a new, unified composition. This process requires a deep understanding of textile history, as the artisan must balance the varying wear patterns and colour palettes of the source materials to create a harmonious final product.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their modular geometry, where the boundaries between the patches create a grid-like rhythm. While traditional rugs often focus on a central medallion or continuous field, the patchwork style breaks these conventions, offering a contemporary perspective that highlights the raw, organic beauty of the material itself.

Owning a patchwork rug is an act of preserving history. It connects the collector to the countless hours of labour invested by the original weavers, while simultaneously celebrating the modern artisan's ability to reimagine and extend the life of these textiles. It is a testament to the idea that true quality only improves with time and thoughtful care.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused labour to assemble each individual piece. The process begins with the careful selection of high-quality vintage textile fragments, which are then stitched and secured with precision to ensure a seamless and durable foundation.

With a total weight of 9.8 kg for this 200 x 140 cm size, the rug demonstrates a substantial density and quality of construction. This significant weight is a direct result of the dense, hand-knotted assembly, reflecting the immense human effort and attention to detail required to create a textile that is both robust and aesthetically refined.

The precision of the hand-knotted construction ensures that the rug maintains its shape and structural integrity over time. By investing in this level of craftsmanship, you are supporting a tradition that values longevity and artistic integrity, resulting in a floor covering that is built to last for generations.
