PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown140 x 200 cm

The tradition of patchwork rug making in Turkey is a modern evolution of an ancient culture of textile preservation. For generations, Turkish artisans have valued the longevity of Wool, often finding ways to repurpose segments of rugs that have sustained local wear, ensuring that the skill and effort woven into the original pieces are not lost to time.

In the context of contemporary design, these patchwork creations have become highly sought after for their ability to bridge the gap between historical craft and modern aesthetic needs. By taking fragments from various older rugs and combining them, the resulting pieces demonstrate a mastery of colour coordination and composition that respects the original weaving traditions while creating something entirely new.

The visual language of these rugs is defined by the interplay of textures and the subtle variations in the original Wool dyes. Each patch tells a partial story of its origin, and when brought together, they form a complex narrative of regional weaving styles, border motifs, and field designs that would otherwise be forgotten.

Owning a patchwork rug is an act of supporting sustainable craft and preserving a lineage of skill. It is a piece that carries the weight of history while fitting seamlessly into a contemporary home, making it a favoured choice for those who value the intersection of heritage, artistry, and lasting quality.

This patchwork rug is constructed through a meticulous process of selecting, cleaning, and reassembling vintage Wool rug fragments. Each piece is hand-stitched with precision to ensure structural integrity, resulting in a cohesive, durable textile that honours the original craftsmanship of the individual segments.

Given its total weight of 9.8 kg, this rug represents a substantial investment in material and labour. The density of the Wool pile across the various patches provides a robust foundation, while the careful reinforcement of the seams ensures that this piece will withstand daily use for many years to come.

The creation of this rug requires a keen eye for colour and pattern balance, as the artisan must harmonise disparate sections into a unified whole. This labour-intensive process transforms salvaged materials into a high-quality, sustainable piece of decor that celebrates the enduring value of hand-crafted textiles.
