Pakistan Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black78 x 109 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition finds its roots in the storied history of Central Asia, where nomadic tribes developed distinct weaving styles to represent their heritage. While the name originates from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, the most celebrated examples today are crafted in Pakistan, where weavers have perfected the art of adapting these historic designs for contemporary homes.

The term 3ply refers to the construction of the pile, where three individual strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it creates a much thicker, more resilient, and more lustrous pile than standard methods, providing a luxurious depth that feels substantial underfoot.

Visually, this tradition is defined by the iconic gul motif, which appears as repeating octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions across the field. These patterns are often enclosed by intricate, multi-layered borders that reflect a meticulous eye for symmetry and balance, showcasing a design language that has been passed down through generations of weavers.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an invitation to bring a piece of cultural history into your living space. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their blend of technical skill and artistic expression, representing a commitment to craftsmanship that transcends trends and provides lasting value.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific piece represents weeks of dedicated work by experienced artisans who ensure every detail is placed with precision.

The dense construction is further evidenced by the total weight of 2.6 kg for this compact size, signalling a high concentration of premium wool and a sturdy foundation. This deliberate approach to craft ensures that the rug is not only visually striking but also built to withstand the demands of a busy home.

By focusing on traditional hand-knotting techniques, the artisans achieve a level of consistency and durability that machines simply cannot replicate. Each knot contributes to the overall strength of the rug, resulting in a finished product that is as reliable as it is visually captivating.
