Pakistan Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Red201 x 292 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition takes its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historic hub of trade and culture. While the style originated in the nomadic tribes of the region, the most sophisticated and finely crafted examples today are primarily produced in Pakistan, where weavers have refined the tradition over generations.

The term 3ply is a hallmark of quality in this tradition, indicating that the wool pile is composed of three strands twisted together. This technique is essential for achieving the characteristic lustrous sheen and the dense, soft feel that these rugs are known for. It ensures that the pile is not only visually rich but also highly durable, capable of withstanding years of use while retaining its texture.

The visual language of the Pakistan Bokhara is defined by its iconic gul motifs, which are repeating, octagonal medallions arranged in structured rows across the field. These motifs are traditionally enclosed by complex, geometric borders that frame the composition. The use of deep, warm red tones is a classic choice, grounding the intricate patterns in a sense of timeless elegance.

These rugs are highly sought after by collectors and those who appreciate fine craftsmanship. Owning a Pakistan Bokhara is an investment in a storied tradition that represents a bridge between nomadic heritage and modern home comfort. The combination of historical design and artisanal skill makes each piece a meaningful addition to any collection.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive craft that requires immense skill and patience. A piece of this size and density represents hundreds of hours of dedicated work, with every individual knot placed by hand to ensure the structural integrity and longevity of the final product.

The 3ply construction refers to the use of three strands of wool twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This specific technique produces a significantly thicker, more durable, and more luxurious pile compared to standard methods, ensuring the rug feels substantial and holds its form over time.

With a weight of 18.2 kg, this rug demonstrates the high volume of material and the tight, precise construction that defines its quality. This weight is a direct indicator of the effort invested in the weaving process, resulting in a robust, heavy-duty floor covering that remains stable and plush underfoot.
