Pakistan Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black141 x 202 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile arts. While the style originated in nomadic traditions across the region, today the finest examples are primarily woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques as families moved and adapted their ancestral designs to new environments.

The 3ply construction mentioned in the description refers to the technique of twisting three individual strands of wool together before they are knotted into the foundation. This method is significant because it results in a thicker, more lustrous, and exceptionally durable pile compared to rugs made with single or double-ply yarns. It is a hallmark of quality that ensures the rug remains soft and vibrant over many years.

Visually, the Bokhara is defined by its iconic gul motifs, which are repeating, octagonal medallions often described as elephant-foot prints. These are typically arranged in clean, symmetrical rows across the field. The borders are equally important, usually featuring geometric patterns that frame the central motifs and provide a formal, balanced look that has remained popular for centuries.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and skill. These pieces are not merely floor coverings but are highly valued for the human effort and historical continuity they represent. Collectors prize them for their ability to bring a sense of history and warmth into a modern home, bridging the gap between ancient craft and contemporary living.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. Each individual knot is placed by hand, a technique that ensures the pattern remains sharp and defined while creating a robust structure that is built to last for generations.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the level of precision in this piece is remarkable. This high knot count is essential for creating a dense, luxurious pile that feels substantial and resists wear. It represents hundreds of hours of dedicated work by master artisans whose expertise is reflected in every detail.

The overall weight of 8.8 kg across the 202 x 141 cm surface provides a tangible sense of quality and heft. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of material used, ensuring the rug lies flat and remains stable on your floor, further highlighting the premium nature of its construction.
