Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BrownRunner81 x 350 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asian weaving. While the name itself is derived from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, the most celebrated examples today are crafted in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques across the region, where master artisans have refined the style to achieve a level of consistency and softness that is highly prized by collectors worldwide.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This method is vital for quality because it creates a thicker, more lustrous, and remarkably durable yarn. By using 2ply wool, the artisans ensure that the rug is not only softer to the touch but also capable of retaining its structure and vibrant appearance even after years of use in your home.

Visually, these rugs are defined by the iconic gul motif, which appears as repeating octagonal or elephant-foot medallions across the field. These symbols are deeply traditional, often framed by complex, geometric borders that demonstrate the weaver's technical skill. While the motifs are standard, the subtle variations in colour and individual knotting mean that every runner displays its own unique personality and character.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a storied past. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the immense skill and cultural heritage they represent. When you bring one into your home, you are acquiring a piece of functional art that carries the weight of centuries of craft, making it a significant addition to any collection.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused work to bring each design to life. The process involves tying individual knots onto a foundation, a labour-intensive technique that results in a remarkably dense and resilient pile. This level of craftsmanship is the hallmark of a premium rug, ensuring that the finished product is built to withstand the rigours of everyday life.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the runner showcases an incredible level of precision. This high knot count is essential for achieving the crisp, clear details seen in the motifs and contributes to the overall weight of 7.1 kg, signalling a robust and substantial construction. The sheer volume of labour required to achieve this density means that every square centimetre of the rug is a testament to the artisan's expertise.

The construction quality is further enhanced by the use of premium wool, which is expertly knotted to create a surface that is both dense and durable. The time and human effort invested in every stage of production are clearly reflected in the final piece, providing you with a high-quality, long-lasting textile that stands apart from machine-made alternatives.
