Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner77 x 358 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design lineage is deeply rooted in this region, the finest examples today are primarily crafted in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques across the Middle East and South Asia, where master artisans have refined the style over generations to maintain its cultural relevance.

The 2ply construction is a technical detail that significantly enhances the rug's performance. By twisting two strands of wool together before knotting, the pile becomes more resilient and lustrous. This specific technique not only provides a fuller, more luxurious feel underfoot but also increases the durability of the rug, as the twisted fibres are better able to resist wear and maintain their colour depth over time.

Signature design elements of these rugs include the field filled with repeating gul motifs, which are stylized, octagonal elephant-foot medallions arranged in precise rows. These are typically framed by elaborate, geometric borders that act as a formal frame for the central pattern. The symmetry and orderly arrangement of these motifs are key to the traditional aesthetic, creating a sense of balance that is highly prized in interior design.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an act of preserving a heritage of skill and dedication. These rugs are valued not only for their visual appeal but for the immense effort required to produce them. Collectors and enthusiasts value these pieces for their lasting quality and the way they bring a sense of history and cultural weight to a modern home, bridging the gap between ancient craft and contemporary living.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision. For a rug of this size, which measures 358 x 77 cm, the artisan has placed approximately 688,000 individual knots to complete the intricate design. This labour-intensive work is what gives the rug its signature density and structural integrity, ensuring that it remains a lasting addition to your home.

The 250,000 knots per m2 density is a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship, allowing for the fine detail seen in the repeating motifs. By using two strands of wool twisted together, the construction creates a more lustrous and resilient pile. This level of detail and material usage requires months of focused work, resulting in a finished product that is significantly more robust and tactile than mass-produced alternatives.

Every square centimetre of this rug is the result of human hands guided by traditional techniques passed down through generations. The weight of 6.9 kg reflects the substantial amount of wool and cotton foundation used to create such a durable piece. This weight is a clear indicator of the density and quality invested in the rug, justifying its place as a premium, long-term investment for your living space.
