Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Beige / Brown76 x 131 cm

The Bokhara rug is a storied tradition that traces its roots to the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara. While these rugs take their name from this historic centre, the most celebrated examples today are crafted in Pakistan, where weavers have mastered and evolved these classic designs to a high degree of excellence.

The '2ply' designation refers to the construction of the Wool pile, where two strands of Wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it creates a pile that is thicker, more lustrous, and significantly more durable than a single-ply construction, ensuring the rug remains a long-term fixture in your home.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their field of repeating gul motifs, which are stylized, octagonal medallions often reminiscent of elephant footprints. These are framed by intricate, geometric borders that provide a sense of structure and balance, making the design both complex and harmonious.

Collecting a Pakistan-made Bokhara is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to bring a sense of history into contemporary interiors, serving as a reminder of the patience and precision that go into traditional hand-crafted textiles.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 131 x 76 cm rug involves over 24,000 individual knots, each placed by hand to ensure the highest level of precision and pattern integrity.

The weight of 2.5 kg reflects the generous amount of high-quality Wool used in its construction, which contributes to the rug's density and long-term durability. This weight is a testament to the significant time and physical effort invested by the artisan, ensuring a finished product that is as resilient as it is beautiful.

Every stage of the weaving process is performed by hand, from the setting of the foundation to the final trimming of the pile. This dedication to craft ensures that each knot is secure and uniform, resulting in a floor covering that maintains its structure and appearance for many years.
