Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange64 x 92 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historic crossroads for traders and artisans. While the style has deep roots in that region, the finest examples today are predominantly woven in Pakistan, where weavers have refined the techniques to produce rugs of exceptional consistency and softness.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of Wool are twisted together before being knotted. This method is vital for the quality of the rug, as it creates a much denser, more lustrous, and durable pile compared to single-ply yarns, ensuring the rug maintains its appearance even with regular use.

The visual language of these rugs is defined by the repeating gul motif, which are typically octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows. These are often framed by elaborate, geometric borders that reflect the meticulous nature of the design tradition, creating a sense of order and rhythmic beauty.

Collecting these rugs is an investment in cultural heritage and personal style. They are valued not just for their aesthetic appeal but for the immense skill required to produce them, representing a tradition of craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations of weavers.

This rug is expertly hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and precision to every detail. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific 92 x 64 cm piece involves a substantial amount of human effort and focused attention to ensure the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays firm over many years of use.

The foundation is built on Cotton to provide structural stability, while the Wool pile is carefully knotted to create a dense, luxurious surface. Given its weight of 1.5 kg, the rug features a robust construction that reflects the high volume of material and labour invested by the weaver throughout the production process.
