Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black60 x 87 cm

Bokhara rugs are deeply rooted in the history of the ancient Silk Road, taking their name from the historic city of Bukhara. While they share a lineage with traditional nomadic weaving styles from Central Asia, the finest contemporary examples are primarily woven in Pakistan. This evolution has seen the refinement of classic motifs to suit modern homes while maintaining their deep cultural provenance.

The 2ply designation refers to a specific technique where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted into the rug. This method is significant because it creates a pile that is substantially more lustrous, durable, and dense than single-ply alternatives. It provides the rug with a fuller look and a more resilient surface that stands up to regular use.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara tradition include the repeating gul motifs, often shaped like elephant feet or octagons, arranged in balanced rows across the field. These are typically framed by elaborate, geometric borders that provide a sense of structure and completion to the overall design. The use of deep red tones is a hallmark of this tradition, symbolising the classic aesthetic that collectors have admired for generations.

Owning a piece from this tradition is about more than just floor decor, as it represents a connection to a long-standing heritage of skill and artistry. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to bring warmth and a sense of history into a space, making them cherished items that can be passed down and enjoyed for years to come.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused effort to its creation. The process involves tying each individual knot by hand, a labour-intensive method that ensures the highest level of structural integrity and pattern definition.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2 across its 87 x 60 cm surface, this rug contains approximately 13,050 individual knots. This high count is a testament to the artisan's precision and the significant amount of time required to produce such a dense and resilient pile.

The combination of this density and the total weight of 1.3 kg reflects the substantial amount of premium wool used in the piece. This construction method results in a durable foundation and a rich, deep pile that showcases the high standards of craft inherent in every Pakistan Bokhara 2ply rug.
