Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark grey248 x 359 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of the Silk Road. While the style draws its name from the ancient city of Bukhara, the most refined and celebrated examples are today woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving knowledge and the adaptation of classic motifs to new cultural contexts.

The '2ply' designation refers to the specific construction of the Wool pile, where two strands of yarn are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it results in a thicker, more durable, and more lustrous pile compared to single-ply alternatives. It provides a tactile depth that enhances the rug's visual appeal and longevity.

Bokhara rugs are defined by their signature 'gul' motifs, which are repeating octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions. These are typically arranged in clean, rhythmic rows across the field and framed by complex, decorative borders. This particular piece showcases a masterful use of this traditional design language, offering a disciplined and elegant aesthetic.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is a commitment to heritage and skill. These pieces are valued by collectors for their ability to maintain their beauty over decades. By choosing a Pakistan Bokhara, you are investing in a piece of cultural history that celebrates the human hands behind the craft.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2 and a total size of approximately 359 by 248 cm, the artisan has placed over 3.2 million individual knots by hand. This labour-intensive work spans several months to ensure every inch of the rug meets the highest standards of precision.

The weight of 22.3 kg is a testament to the generous use of premium materials and the density of the construction. This substantial weight ensures the rug lays flat and maintains its shape over time, reflecting the quality of the materials and the dedication of the craftspeople who brought it to life.
