Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark yellow / Dark green247 x 356 cm

Bokhara rugs are deeply rooted in the ancient traditions of Central Asia, taking their name from the historic Silk Road city of Bukhara. While they draw inspiration from nomadic tribal designs, the finest modern iterations are produced in Pakistan. This migration of craft has allowed the tradition to evolve, blending ancient aesthetics with contemporary standards of quality.

The term 2ply in this rug's construction is a hallmark of quality. By using two strands of wool twisted together, the artisan creates a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable. This technical choice ensures that the rug retains its structural integrity and visual depth over time, providing a superior experience for the owner.

Visually, these rugs are defined by the repeating gul motif, which often resembles elephant footprints or stylized octagons. In this particular piece, the choice of a calm green field offers a refreshing take on the traditional, often red-dominant palette. The formal borders and balanced layout reflect a long-standing design language that emphasises symmetry and order.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is about more than just decor. It is an investment in a storied craft that has been passed down through generations. Collectors value these pieces for their cultural weight, the skill evident in every knot, and the enduring beauty that only a genuine, hand-crafted textile can provide to a home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2 across its 356 x 247 cm frame, the total construction involves millions of individual hand-tied knots. Such a labour-intensive endeavour takes months of dedicated effort, reflecting a commitment to quality that mass-produced items cannot match.

The 2ply construction refers to the use of two strands of wool twisted together before being knotted into the cotton foundation. This technique significantly increases the strength and lustre of the pile, allowing the rug to withstand daily wear while maintaining its vibrant appearance. The weight of 22 kg is a testament to the density of materials used, indicating a robust construction that speaks to the artisan's expertise.
