Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark green / Dark yellow246 x 301 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of the Silk Road, taking its name from the ancient city of Bukhara. While these designs were historically nomadic, the finest modern examples are expertly crafted in Pakistan. This evolution has allowed the traditional aesthetic to flourish in a new cultural context, combining historic motifs with refined materials.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the Wool yarn, where two strands are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is essential for quality, as it creates a stronger, more lustrous, and thicker pile than single-ply alternatives. It is this construction choice that gives these rugs their signature soft feel and long-lasting durability.

Visually, these rugs are known for their repeating motifs, which in this instance take the form of graceful floral elements. While many traditional Bokhara rugs favour deep red fields, this particular piece is distinctive for its serene green palette, offering a fresh and sophisticated take on a classic design language that is typically framed by intricate, geometric borders.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their consistency of pattern and the sheer dedication required to produce them. To bring one into your home is to connect with a centuries-old lineage of artisans who have perfected the art of the knotted floor covering.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision from the artisan. With 360,000 knots per m2, the construction is exceptionally dense, which results in a sharper, more defined pattern and a pile that is built to endure for generations.

The labour-intensive nature of this craft means that creating such a rug takes months of dedicated focus. Every individual knot is tied by hand, contributing to the substantial 18.5 kg weight of the piece. This density is a direct indicator of the quality and the hundreds of hours of human effort woven into every square centimetre.

The high knot count not only ensures the durability of the rug but also allows for the intricate floral details to remain crisp and clear over time. By investing in this piece, you are supporting a time-honoured craft tradition where the focus is entirely on the integrity of the finished product.
