Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Dark blue202 x 302 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub of textile trade and artistry. While the design language originated in this region, the finest examples today are woven in Pakistan, where artisans have refined the craft over generations to produce rugs of exceptional quality and consistency.

The '2ply' designation is a mark of technical excellence, referring to a construction where two strands of Wool are twisted together to form the yarn for the pile. This method creates a significantly denser, more lustrous, and durable surface than single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug feels substantial and holds its appearance beautifully over time.

The visual language of the Bokhara is defined by its repetitive, calming motifs. The field is typically filled with rows of gul medallions—often described as elephant-foot shapes—which represent a centuries-old design tradition. This specific rug features these classic motifs set against a rich blue field, offering a refined and contemporary interpretation of a historical aesthetic.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a long-standing cultural heritage. These pieces are valued by collectors not only for their skill and material quality but for the sense of permanence they bring to a home. Choosing a rug like this means supporting a craft that prioritises human effort and legacy over mass production.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weavers achieve a level of precision and structural integrity that simply cannot be replicated by machines.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the rug contains approximately 1.5 million hand-tied knots in total. This high knot density is essential for the sharp definition of its intricate patterns and the overall durability of the pile, ensuring the rug retains its form and beauty over decades of use.

The weight of 15.3 kg across its 6.1 m2 surface area speaks to the generous amount of quality Wool used in its construction. This substantial material investment, combined with the rigorous hand-knotting process, results in a robust and long-lasting foundation that rewards the touch and performs reliably in any home.
