Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown195 x 200 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub of textile trade and culture. While the style originated with nomadic tribes who developed these patterns over centuries, the finest examples today are primarily woven in Pakistan, where artisans have refined the tradition to an exceptional level of technical mastery.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it results in a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable, ensuring the rug can withstand high traffic while maintaining its rich, plush texture.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara tradition include the repeating gul motifs, which are stylised, octagonal medallions arranged in rhythmic rows across the field. These are traditionally framed by intricate, multi-layered borders that showcase geometric precision, creating a balanced aesthetic that has remained a favourite among collectors for generations.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is a connection to a long heritage of textile artistry. These pieces are valued not just for their visual appeal but for the immense skill and cultural history woven into every knot, making them meaningful additions to any home that values lasting quality and human-centred design.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weavers ensure a level of structural integrity and pattern precision that machines simply cannot achieve, resulting in a floor covering that is as resilient as it is beautiful.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this rug showcases an exceptional degree of detail and a remarkably dense pile. This high knot count is a hallmark of superior craft, ensuring that the intricate patterns remain sharp and clear while providing a sturdy foundation that resists wear and retains its shape over time.

The total weight of 9.8 kg across its 200 x 195 cm dimensions speaks to the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its production. This weight is a tangible indicator of the dense, substantial construction that defines this piece, reflecting the significant labour and care invested by the artisan to create a product of lasting value.
