Usak rugs trace their origins back to the historic town of Usak in western Anatolia, which has served as a major centre for carpet production since the Ottoman Empire. Over centuries, this renowned tradition spread across regions, with skilled weavers in Afghanistan adopting and adapting these classic motifs to create pieces of remarkable beauty and enduring cultural resonance.

The traditional crafting techniques behind these rugs have been passed down through generations of artisan families. Weavers use time-honoured upright looms and hand-tied knots, preserving methods that connect modern homes directly to centuries of textile artistry and regional heritage.

Visually, Usak rugs are celebrated for their distinctive approach to design, often featuring large-scale medallions, flowing organic elements, and soft field colours balanced by intricate decorative borders. The motifs draw inspiration from natural forms and historical patterns, creating a harmonious visual rhythm that feels both grounded and expressive.

Collecting a vintage or handcrafted Usak rug means owning a piece of living history. These rugs are valued not only for their decorative presence but for the immense human skill and cultural heritage woven into every square centimetre, making them treasured additions to thoughtfully curated homes.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of careful work to bring each piece to life. The process begins by hand-selecting the finest natural wool fibres, which are then spun and dyed before the weaving begins on a traditional upright loom.

With a knot density of 90.000 knots per m2, artisans manually tie tens of thousands of individual knots across the 305 x 249 cm foundation. This intensive hand-knotting process results in an approximate total count of over 680.000 individually secured knots, requiring exceptional precision and patience.

The heavy construction, weighing a total of 30.4 kg, reflects the sheer density of material and the immense labour invested in the weaving process. This time-tested hand-knotted technique ensures exceptional structural integrity and pile resilience that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.
