Usak - A Piece of Home Worth Keeping

Discover this truly one-of-a-kind handmade Usak rug from Afghanistan, featuring a soft green field and distinct traditional motifs.

This wonderful Usak rug from Afghanistan brings a welcoming and warm atmosphere to your room. Measuring 287 x 249 cm, it offers generous coverage that helps anchor your seating area or living space while introducing a calm, grounded aesthetic.

Woven from 100% wool, the pile feels wonderfully soft and tactile underfoot. Natural wool fibres naturally regulate indoor warmth and provide effective sound absorption, creating a cosier and quieter home environment for everyday family life.

The 9 mm thick pile provides a substantial, comforting feel when you walk across it. Each individual knot contributes to a dense surface that cushions your steps while holding its rich appearance through years of regular use.

Because this rug is completely one of a kind, no other home will ever have this exact piece. The distinctive arrangement of patterns makes it a genuine conversation starter that connects your floors to a long-standing craft tradition.

Usak rugs trace their origins to the historic town of Usak in western Anatolia, which has stood as a major centre of carpet production since the late Ottoman period. Over generations, these designs travelled along trade routes, influencing weavers across the wider Middle East and Central Asia.

While traditional Usak carpets often favour large-scale floral arrangements and open fields, weavers in Afghanistan have embraced and adapted these motifs with local creativity. This regional blending keeps the craft vibrant, combining classic composition with the distinct artistic expression of Afghan makers.

The visual language of this tradition relies on balanced layouts featuring distinct medallion structures and ornate borders. The soft light green field provides a calm backdrop that allows the varied motifs to stand out with clear visual interest.

Collecting a handmade Usak rug means bringing home a piece of living cultural heritage. Owning such a carefully crafted item demonstrates an appreciation for traditional skills that no machine-made floor covering can ever replicate.

Skilled artisans have crafted this piece entirely by hand using traditional hand-knotting techniques passed down through generations. Making a rug of this size and construction requires months of dedicated human labour, patience, and careful attention to detail.

With a knot density of 40,000 knots per m2, the weavers carefully place every single knot by hand across the entire 7.15 m2 surface, resulting in a total count of approximately 286,000 individually tied knots.

This careful knotting process ensures that the foundation remains sturdy and the pile stays firmly in place, giving you a durable floor covering built to last for generations.

The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Do this

Address spills promptly to minimize staining. Blot the affected area gently with a dry, undyed cloth—never rub, as this may embed the stain further into the fibers.
