NahavandHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red136 x 207 cm

Nahavand rugs take their name from the historic city of Nahavand, located in the mountainous region of the Middle East. This area has long been a centre for traditional weaving, where generations of families have preserved their unique design heritage, often drawing inspiration from the surrounding rugged landscapes and local nomadic traditions.

The term hand-knotted refers to the technique where each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation threads. This method is the hallmark of quality in the region, as it allows for intricate detailing and a dense, durable pile that is far superior to machine-made alternatives. The tightness of these knots is what gives the rug its lasting strength.

Visually, Nahavand rugs are famous for their bold, geometric medallion designs and a distinctive, earthy colour palette often dominated by deep reds and blues. The motifs are typically angular and stylised, reflecting a blend of village and tribal artistic influences that have been refined over centuries to create balanced, harmonious compositions.

Collecting a Nahavand rug is an investment in cultural history and traditional skill. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic beauty, but as symbols of a living craft tradition. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving the legacy of the artisans who crafted it and adding a piece of authentic heritage to your living space.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and dedication. With 90,000 knots per m2, the creation of this piece involves hundreds of thousands of individual hand-tied knots, a level of precision that ensures the patterns remain sharp and the pile remains dense for years to come.

The weight of 14.1 kg for this 207 x 136 cm piece is a testament to the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its construction. This significant weight is a clear indicator of a robust foundation and a dense, long-lasting pile that has been built to withstand the test of time.

Transforming raw wool into a finished rug of this size and complexity takes a skilled artisan many months of focused work. Every movement is deliberate, ensuring that the tension is consistent throughout the entire surface, which is why the finished piece feels so substantial and refined.
