Modern Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Orange / Dark yellow139 x 212 cm

The tradition of rug weaving in the Middle East is deeply embedded in the cultural landscape of the region, drawing on centuries of nomadic and settled craft practices. These rugs are known for their ability to synthesize ancient techniques with a modern design sensibility, creating pieces that feel relevant in today's homes while respecting the heritage of the past.

The term Gabbeh refers to a style of rug traditionally characterised by its thick, plush pile and simplified, often geometric or abstract patterns. Unlike more formal, intricate carpets, these pieces prioritise the raw beauty of the Wool and the expressive use of colour, resulting in a design that feels spontaneous and deeply personal.

Visually, this rug utilises a bold striped arrangement, which is a classic motif in many regional weaving traditions. The interplay of colours against the natural tones of the Wool highlights the artisan's eye for balance. The use of a repeating diamond-like grid superimposed over the stripes adds a layer of sophistication, turning a simple linear design into a complex visual narrative.

Owning a rug made in the Middle East is an investment in a storied craft tradition. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their authenticity and the tactile, human quality that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match. By choosing this rug, you are supporting a legacy of skill and preserving a unique cultural art form for future generations.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted, a process that demands immense patience and skill from the artisans who craft it. By individually tying each knot onto a cotton foundation, the weavers create a structure that is remarkably sturdy and designed to withstand the rigours of a busy home.

The construction of this rug is defined by its impressive weight of 14.7 kg, which serves as a testament to the density of the Wool and the sheer amount of material invested in its creation. This weight is a key indicator of its quality and durability, ensuring that the rug stays securely in place while providing a luxurious, heavy drape.

Every inch of this rug reflects the human effort poured into its making. The precision of the hand-knotted technique allows for the intricate alignment of the striped pattern, resulting in a finished piece that feels substantial, well-made, and ready to serve as a long-lasting addition to your living space.
