MehrabanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black147 x 189 cm

The Mehraban rug tradition is deeply rooted in the weaving heritage of the Middle East. These rugs are historically produced in the Hamadan region, where local weaving techniques have been passed down through generations. The style is celebrated for its ability to blend traditional regional motifs with a rustic, home-spun aesthetic that feels both grounded and sophisticated.

A defining technical feature of these rugs is the use of a sturdy foundation, which ensures the piece is both heavy and durable. The Wool used is selected for its resilience, and the knotting technique creates a dense surface that is naturally resistant to wear. This makes them highly practical for busy households while retaining the artisanal charm of a hand-crafted object.

Visually, Mehraban rugs are often recognised by their bold, geometric interpretations of floral and medallion motifs. The designs frequently feature a central, stylised floral arrangement or a repeating lattice, all framed by wide, substantial borders. The colour palettes are typically vibrant yet earthy, often incorporating deep reds, blues, and rich creams that reflect the natural dyes traditionally used in the region.

Owning a Mehraban rug is an investment in history and human skill. Because these rugs are not mass-produced, they represent a connection to a specific cultural craft that values quality over speed. Collectors appreciate them for their unpretentious beauty and the way they soften a room, providing a sense of place and comfort that only a genuine, hand-knotted rug can offer.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense patience and precision. Each individual knot is tied by hand, resulting in a robust structure that creates a dense, resilient pile capable of withstanding daily use for generations.

With a total weight of 11.1 kg, this rug demonstrates the substantial amount of material and effort invested in its creation. The significant weight is a direct result of the high-density construction, which requires weeks of dedicated work by skilled artisans to complete.

The time and human effort poured into every square centimetre of this rug ensure that the patterns remain sharp and clear. By prioritising traditional hand-knotting methods over mass production, this piece achieves a level of quality and longevity that brings real value to your home.
