Mashad rugs originate from the holy city of Mashad, located in the northeastern region of the Middle East. This city has long been a vital centre for the textile arts, known for its ability to produce large-scale, elaborate floor coverings that often grace grand homes and public spaces. The region has a deep-rooted cultural tradition that emphasises the fusion of artistic expression with practical utility.

The quality of these rugs is often defined by their construction, which traditionally utilises a soft, high-quality wool that is known for its resilience and ability to take deep, rich dyes. The use of a dense knot count is a hallmark of the Mashad style, ensuring that the finished product is not only beautiful but also capable of withstanding the rigours of daily use while maintaining its luxurious feel.

Visually, Mashad rugs are celebrated for their highly detailed designs, which often feature a prominent central medallion surrounded by a complex field of floral motifs, scrolling vines, and palmettes. The borders are typically wide and meticulously detailed, serving to frame the central composition and provide a sense of visual balance and harmony that is characteristic of the finest Middle Eastern weaving traditions.

Collecting a Mashad rug is an opportunity to own a piece of cultural history that embodies the patience and dedication of generations of artisans. These rugs are highly valued for their artistic complexity and their ability to anchor a room with a sense of tradition and permanence. Owning one is a mark of appreciation for the skill and heritage that continue to define this storied craft.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring its complex design to life. The process begins with securing the cotton foundation, onto which thousands of individual wool knots are tied by hand to build the pile. This labour-intensive method is what allows for the precise, sharp pattern definition and the incredibly dense, resilient structure that defines a high-quality hand-knotted rug.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, this piece represents a significant investment of time and human skill. The sheer volume of knots creates a robust and heavy construction, weighing 47.3 kg, which is a direct indicator of the superior material density and the rigorous attention to detail required at every stage of the weaving process.

The combination of the substantial 13 mm pile and the high knot count results in a rug that is not only visually striking but also exceptionally durable. By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a time-honoured craft that prioritises precision and longevity over mass-produced alternatives, ensuring that your rug retains its integrity and beauty for years to come.
