MashadHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black195 x 305 cm

Mashad rugs hail from the city of Mashad in the northeastern part of the Middle East. This region has long been an important centre for fine textile production, with a history of weaving that spans centuries. The rugs from this city are celebrated for their ability to blend traditional artistic motifs with a distinct local aesthetic that is instantly recognisable to collectors.

The quality of a Mashad rug is often judged by the fineness of its weave and the quality of the materials used. The term hand-knotted indicates that every single strand of the pile is individually tied to the foundation, a method that allows for a level of detail and durability that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match. This labour-intensive technique ensures that the rug remains a durable, high-performing element of your home.

Visually, these rugs are famous for their large, central floral medallions and an expansive field filled with scrolling vines and palmettes. While red is a traditional and highly prized colour for this style, the specific interplay of colours in this piece highlights the depth and complexity typical of the finest examples from this region.

Collecting a Mashad rug is an investment in cultural history. These pieces are valued not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the preservation of weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations. Owning this rug means participating in a legacy of skill and beauty that continues to define the reputation of Middle Eastern textile arts.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that demands incredible focus and patience from the artisan. With approximately 950,000 individual knots tied by hand across the entire surface, the construction is exceptionally solid and built to last for generations.

The dedication required for such a project is immense, as a single artisan may spend many months of focused labour to complete a piece of this size and complexity. Each knot contributes to the structural integrity of the rug, creating a dense, resilient foundation that resists wear and maintains the crispness of its floral patterns.

The substantial weight of 25 kg further underscores the quality of the materials used and the density of the hand-knotted construction. This weight provides a stable, heavy drape on the floor, reflecting the significant amount of wool and effort invested in its creation.
