Mashad ca. 1920Hand KnottedRug

Black / Brown269 x 365 cm

Originating from the historic city of Mashad in Persia, this rug carries forward a long-standing tradition of fine weaving. Mashad has long been celebrated as a major centre of carpet production, where generations of weavers have refined the art of creating large, decorative floor coverings that balance durability with intricate artistic expression.

The traditional hand-knotted construction seen here relies on precise knotting techniques passed down through centuries. Each strand of wool is carefully secured by hand, creating a dense pile that anchors the intricate motifs and ensures the rug maintains its structure and appearance over decades of use.

The visual language of Mashad rugs typically features grand central medallions surrounded by elaborate floral sprays and balanced corner designs, all framed by structured borders. This piece showcases these classic design elements in a harmonious composition of red and dark-blue tones, reflecting the artistic heritage of its region.

Owning an antique rug from this renowned tradition means bringing a piece of cultural history into your daily life. It represents a level of human skill and dedication that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot replicate, making it a valued addition for anyone who appreciates enduring quality and heritage.

Every square metre of this handcrafted Mashad rug represents months of dedicated human effort. Skilled artisans have individually tied each knot by hand, achieving a count of 160,000 knots per m2 across the expansive 365 x 269 cm dimensions.

Weighing in at 29.5 kg, the substantial construction reflects the dense use of quality materials and time-honoured knotting techniques. This meticulous hand-knotted process requires immense patience and precision, resulting in a robust foundation and a tightly packed pile that stands up to the demands of everyday life.
