MamlukHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Brown247 x 297 cm

The Mamluk style of rug finds its historical roots in the 15th and 16th centuries during the reign of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt. These rugs were renowned for their sophisticated geometric designs and their specific, muted colour palettes. While the original pieces were woven in Cairo, the tradition has found a new, vibrant home in Afghanistan, where master weavers have revitalised these historical patterns for a contemporary audience.

The technical brilliance of a Mamluk rug lies in its complex geometric composition. Unlike the floral motifs found in many other regional traditions, Mamluk rugs prioritise interlocking polygons, star-shaped medallions, and intricate borders. This reliance on geometry requires a high level of mathematical precision from the weaver, as the pattern must remain perfectly aligned throughout the entire process.

Signature design elements of the Mamluk tradition include the prominent central medallion, often surrounded by smaller, repeating octagonal or star-shaped motifs. The borders are typically composed of elaborate, stylised floral and geometric bands that frame the central field. These pieces are particularly valued for their ability to harmonise with various decor styles, as their patterns are complex yet visually balanced.

Collectors value Mamluk rugs for their historical significance and the immense skill required to produce them. Owning a Mamluk piece is an acknowledgment of a long-standing artistic lineage that connects the modern home to the grandeur of the Silk Road era. These rugs are not merely floor coverings but are considered significant cultural artefacts that bring heritage, skill, and enduring style to any interior.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process that requires patience and precision. With a total of approximately 117,300 knots placed by hand across its surface, the creation of this piece represents hundreds of hours of dedicated work. This manual labour is what gives the rug its remarkable durability and the slight variations that confirm its authentic, individual character.

The 29.3 kg weight of this rug is a clear indicator of the high-quality materials and dense construction used during the weaving process. By packing a significant amount of wool into every square metre, the artisans ensure that the finished product is not only beautiful but also resilient and long-lasting. This density is a hallmark of premium craft, providing a substantial weight that keeps the rug firmly in place.

Every knot is tied with intention, ensuring the geometric motifs are rendered with clarity and longevity. The combination of the 160,000 knots per m2 density and the robust material foundation creates a structure that will hold its shape and beauty for years to come. This commitment to traditional techniques ensures that you are investing in a piece built with integrity and human care.
